Google Pixel Fold: Here is what we currently know

Google Pixel Fold: Google might be planning for foldable phone, After years of speculations, the Google Pixel Fold may finally be released. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 leads the foldable phone industry. It may soon face major competition.

We’re calling it the Google Pixel Fold for now, although leaks say it may be dubbed the Pixel Notepad or Pixel Fold. Below are some design, screen, camera, and other specifications we’ve heard. We also collected leaks concerning the pricing and a likely delivery date, which most speculations place around early to mid-2023.

Design and display: Google Pixel Fold

Someone leaked the Google Pixel Fold, including unauthorized renderings. These unauthorised photographs and information seem to be from a credible source. As you can see, when folded, the design resembles the Pixel 7 series, but it has a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold form factor.

The Google Pixel Fold reportedly comes in white and black aluminium and glass. It’s hefty and has big bezels above and below the primary screen.
We also tested a dummy from a manufacturer of Pixel Fold accessory.

The images from this show big bezels (which might be there to keep the price down), a 5.7mm thickness at the narrowest point, an 8.7mm thickness including the camera block, a less slender form factor than Samsung’s phones, and a likely less noticeable crease.
We’ve also heard that Google bought 7.6-inch foldable OLED panels from Samsung Display. Recent reports from @OnLeaks and HowToiSolve suggest a 7.69-inch folding screen and a 5.79-inch cover display.

When unfurled, the measurements are 158.7 x 139.7 x 5.7mm (increasing to 8.3mm with the back camera bump), and they offered renderings that look like those above, one of which is below.
Another source claims the panel of Google Pixel Fold will feature 2208 x 1840 pixels, 1,200 nits of brightness, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The same source states 123 x 148mm.
However, an Android 12L Beta 2 animation depicts a folding phone that is shorter and wider than the Z Fold 4, like the Oppo Find N.

This animation may depict the Pixel Fold, but it may just be generic.
The Pixel Fold’s cover display, which isn’t foldable, may measure 5.8 inches.

A Google patent depicts a screen that expands to tablet size and may be extended farther, resembling rollable phone designs. We doubt Google’s first foldable phone will feature this design, since it’s ambitious.

Patently Mobile found two more Google Pixel Fold phone patents, one of which has a clamshell design while the other has two hinges to create a Z-shape and move from smartphone to tablet size.

Google seems to be testing several folding designs, but it’s probable that the corporation has chosen a Galaxy Z Fold-like design.

Release Date and Price

Google Pixel Fold leaks indicated a late 2022 release. We’ve heard it before, but with no phone at the Pixel 7 announcement, it’s improbable.

According to a new leak, the Google Pixel Fold won’t ship until 2023, despite a late 2022 launch date. Another speculation suggests the phone will launch in Q1 2023 (January–March). The latest release date speculation is May 2023, so we may have to wait.

The Google Pixel Fold may never materialise because it was cancelled. However, Ross Young has now said that it’s slated for Q1 2023, so either he was mistaken or Google has reconsidered. Google code has “isPixel2022Foldable,” implying the phone will launch shortly.

We’d also be wary of these leaks, particularly because some release date speculations have been inaccurate. A story stated that Google and other businesses have bought foldable phone screens from Samsung Display and will introduce handsets with them in 2021.

The same publication recently mentioned the same thing, while another leak about Samsung Display phones named the Google Pixel Fold as arriving in Q4 2021. That didn’t happen, but the Pixel Fold may have been delayed until 2023.

One leak cites a price of $1,400 (£1,040 / AU$1,960). It would be cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, yet pricey. A new leak puts its pricing at $1,799 (approximately £1,520 / AU$2,660), matching the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Google Pixel Fold: Features and Specs

Unsurprisingly, a benchmark reveals the Pixel Fold will use the same Tensor G2 processor and 12GB of RAM as the Pixel 7 Pro. However, the Pixel Fold’s test lists the older original Tensor chipset, 12GB of RAM, and Android 12. We’ve also heard it mentioned. These leaks are older, so Google may have updated it to the G2.

This chipset may utilise the Pixel 7 range’s cameras, but we’re not sure. If it has such cameras, anticipate a dual- or triple-lens arrangement with primary, ultra-wide, and potentially telephoto (5x optical zoom) snappers.

Another report suggests the Pixel 5’s 12.2MP primary camera, Pixel 6’s 12MP ultra-wide, and two 8MP selfie cameras (one on each screen). It’s been repeated.

One source claims a 64MP+12.2MP+10MP rear camera for the Google Pixel Fold, although other leaks and speculations disagree. Leaked renderings reveal a triple-lens back camera and 9.5MP selfie cams. Since Google patented under-display cameras, the phone may contain them. Leaked photographs contradict this.

We can only guess the Google Pixel foldable phone’s specifications. It will likely run Android 13, although it will definitely run the newest Android version upon launch.

Based on the Pixel series, it may feature good cameras but fewer lenses than competitors. The foldable should also support 5G. Finally, a little change to the Google Camera software hints that Google is preparing its own software for the Pixel Fold.
