MacBook Pro 14 inch vs. MacBook Max 16-inch: What are the main differences?

The new MacBook Pro notebooks from Apple are finally available. We have the new 14 inches MacBook Pro and a larger 16-inch variant, which replaces the older 16-inch model with an Intel processor. The new MacBook Pros can use either the M1 Pro (or the M1 Max chip) — two new silicon that joins the M1 family.

MacBook Pro 14-inch vs. MacBook Max 16-inch: What are the main differences?

We wanted to highlight the differences between the two MacBook Pros, which you might have missed during the keynote. Although the two versions have many differences, both are worthy of being included in our collection of the top Macs. This guide will help you choose the suitable model for you before you order the new MacBook Pro.

MacBook Pro 14-inch vs. MacBook Max 16-inch: Specs compared

Let’s take a look at the specifications for each MacBook Pro model and see what you get in return for your money:

Design and ports: New-look with more ports

Apple’s new MacBook Pro notebooks feature a squared-off design and flat edges. Apple almost seems to want to reverse its product designs to make them more like the older ones. Although the changes are subtle on the outside, you can still tell the difference between older and new versions. This is evident in the port selection of the new MacBook Pro.

The design differences between the 15-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are minimal.

Both models have the same flat-edged design and are available in Silver or Space Grey colors. As you can see from the table, the 16-inch MacBook Pro weighs 1.3 pounds more than the 14-inch model.

Both versions have dropped the Touch Bar and replaced it with physical function keys, which many people love.

Both models come with the same Backlit Magic keyboard, which can be used with an Ambient light sensor and TouchID. Due to the enormous keyboard deck, the Force Touch trackpad on 16-inch models is slightly larger. The notebooks have a six-speaker high-fidelity sound system with force-canceling woofers. These speakers, which fire from the top of both keyboards, support spatial audio for music and video using Dolby Atmos.

We are most excited about MagSafe’s return and the return of ports. MagSafe is back! It magnetically attaches your charging cable to your MacBook Pro. If you accidentally pull the cord, it will detach from your device and not pull on the whole notebook.

To protect your MacBook Pro, you might consider the best MacBook Pro case. Apple has updated MagSafe and increased the charging speed compared to older Macs.

The new MacBook Pro models have MagSafe in addition to an HDMI port, an SD card reader, and a 3,5mm headphone jack. We think Apple has done the right thing and brought back more ports for MacBook Pro users.

The display now with a notch

It turns out that the rumors about Apple using mini-LED technology to light these notebooks are true. Both models now have min-LED backlighting instead of LED. Apple calls it Liquid Retina XDR display. You get a more comprehensive range of colors, a higher contrast ratio (1,000,000 to 1), and deeper blacks. The webcam is housed in a notch at the top of both models.

This is an interesting design choice. This at least provides the 1080p quality upgrade that was lacking in the 720p cam.

The display technology used in the 14-inch and 16-inch models is the same but in different sizes. A 14.2-inch panel has a resolution of 3024×644 on the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

The 16.2-inch panel has a resolution of 3456×2234 on the 16-inch model. The refresh rates are the same for both models. Apple uses ProMotion technology to provide adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz. You can turn off ProMotion tech to use fixed refresh rates as a user.

Performance: Supercharged by M1 Pro and M1 Max chips

The new MacBook Pro notebooks use Apple’s M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. These new chips offer faster speeds and more cores for an enhanced computing experience. These chips are faster than the original M1 chip, particularly in the GPU department. You will still be able to configure the 14-inch and 16-inch versions with the same specs. This includes the RAM and storage.

The notebooks can have 64GB of unified memory, up to 8TB storage, and both models can be customized. Standard base configurations include 16GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. Two times faster storage speeds than the previous generation MacBook Pros are also available with the new MacBook Pros. These speeds are comparable to what you would get with PCIe 4.0 storage available on the market. Apple claims that the new MacBook Pro models have an advanced thermal system for cooling. Even at low fan speeds, it’s claimed to move 50 percent more air. Both models use the same cooling system, so there is no weight difference or form factor.

MacBook Pro 14-inch vs. MacBook Pro 16-inch: Portability

The smaller, 14-inch MacBook Pro is more portable than its larger counterpart. The new 14-inch MacBook Pro has a size almost identical to the 13 inches MacBook Pro. It measures 15.5mm thick, weighs 3.5 lbs, and is 3.5 pounds. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is 16.8mm thick and weighs in at 4.7 pounds. The larger display and battery mean that it has a broader footprint. The battery for the 14-inch MacBook Pro is 69.6Whr, while the 99.6Whr version of this model comes in at 69.6Whr.

The decision is simple: choose a larger display and a larger battery, or settle for the smaller one to maximize portability. Although the 14-inch MacBook Pro is the lighter machine, it can be carried around much more quickly. There are larger Windows machines available. It’s an excellent opportunity to remind you that the MacBook Air is still one of Apple’s most portable notebooks.

After all, why did Apple buy some Macbook Recall, you have not even bought it

MacBook Pro 14 vs. MacBook Pro 16. Final Thoughts

Although the new MacBook Pros share many similarities, you should still consider some things before making a purchase decision. The differences between the MacBook Air and Pro are minor, but your decision will primarily be based on the size of the display and the battery life. The 14-inch MacBook is best for power users on the move, while the 16-inch MacBook is better suited to those who have a working setup.

The new MacBook Pro notebooks are doing very well, all things being equal. Apple gave pros all they needed, including the MagSafe charging cord, more ports, a redesigned keyboard that has function keys and not a Touch Bar, as well as a high-resolution panel. The new M1 Pro chips and M1 Max chips look great on paper.
