Cyberpunk edgerunner Review Netflix 2024

A five-minute cut-scene in Cyberpunk 2077 detailed VX’s rise through the criminal ranks. It took around five episodes for David Martinez to totally break bad on the Cyberpunk edgerunner. Studio Trigger and writer Rafa Jaki are afforded the luxury of 10 episodes to delve deeply into the Night City and the shattered ambitions of its citizens, presenting a compelling case that CDPR may have a foundation upon which to create future cyberpunk tales.

As a spinoff of CDPR’s Cyberpunk 2077, Mike Pondsmith’s popular tabletop RPG, Cyberpunk edgerunner takes place in the same universe. The environment and aesthetics are lifted straight from the video game, but a fresh cast of people drives the narrative. In a nutshell, don’t look for V or Johnny Silverhand in the anime.

The protagonist of Edgerunners is David Martinez, a gifted student whose mother can’t afford to maintain him on her meagre paramedic pay because of the high cost of living in Night City.

Cyberpunk edgerunner Review 2024 New Update

When David is left on his own, Edgerunners explores the many ways in which Night City, with its capitalist underpinnings and cybernetically augmented gangs, may be scary. Night City’s hyper-capitalism becomes the early antagonist in Edgerunners as David sinks farther and deeper into debt, gets expelled from the exclusive school he can no longer afford, and is harassed by debt-collectors.

David’s fortunes improve when he befriends the fascinating netrunner Lucy and joins the lovable mercenary squad lead by the resolute and armed Maine. Here starts his training to become a mercenary in Night City.

Cyberpunk edgerunner Review Netflix 2024

When Edgerunners delves into the many stages of Night City’s hostile life cycle, the game really shines.

While Keanu Reeves’ Johnny Silverhand essentially takes over V’s body and mind and redirects their mercenary escapades, David’s plot focuses almost solely on the criminal elements of Night City. Eventually, Maine’s team will get embroiled in the rivalry between two of the city’s major Megacorps and the plans of a Fixer called Faraday (played by Giancarlo Esposito with his usual exemplary menace).

While Edgerunners is at its finest, it examines the different parts of Night City’s antagonistic life cycle, such as the way street gangs and mercenaries commit crimes for the benefit of Fixers, who are indebted to Night City’s actual overlords, the Megacorps. Cyberpunk edgerunners put these connections front and centre, and David’s ascent through this hierarchy provides an intriguing look at the world from a new angle.

Studio Trigger, pioneers of the expressionistic anime excess, has only bolstered the story’s visuals. Studios like Ghost in the Shell and Akira, both classics of the cyberpunk genre, concentrate on realistic depictions of future cities; Studio Trigger, on the other hand, takes a more stylized approach. Forget the blood and bare flesh (there’s enough of both), Studio Trigger’s Night City looks more vibrant than any cyberpunk anime before it thanks to the same filters used to produce Kill la Kill and Space Patrol Luluco.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners | Official Teaser | Netflix

Tell your Chooms: CD PROJEKT RED + Studio Trigger = Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, a 10 episode anime story.

This suggests that despite very low anticipation, Edgerunners has a shot at becoming a surprise smash in the television industry this year. Untethered from the core plot of CDPR’s video game, Jaki, who acted as business development on Cyberpunk 2077 and writer of The Witcher Ronin manga, opted to investigate the larger features of Night City, yielding considerably stronger narrative outcomes.

The main characters of Edgerunners are interesting enough to warrant such an investment, yet they sometimes get overlooked in favour of expanding the show’s depiction of Night City. There are characters that are introduced too late or who leave before they have fully developed, respectively. Thankfully, the story’s main characters, David and Lucy, receive their due, and we follow them through their budding romance and on to a tragic denouement.

Edgerunners is able to focus on the day-to-day existence of a Night City mercenary via a few main characters who are all ultimately simply trying to live and survive, despite the fact that cyberpunk has always been more about Night City than its individuals. The vicious nature of Night City’s food chain ultimately determines their destinies more than anything they accomplish.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners argue that CDPR’s concept of Night City has many untapped resources.

Studio Trigger’s animated style is more whimsical and ostentatious, creating a seesaw effect in the narrative. The hyper-realism of the cyberpunk genre is kept in check by Studio Trigger’s adult narrative, and the graphic style helps lighten the mood when the tale becomes too dark. Not at all; they go along well.

Edgerunners aren’t really meant to replace Cyberpunk 2077, but rather to complement it. Fans of Cyberpunk 2077 may get a taste of Night City from two distinct mediums thanks to the anime and the video game, respectively. The latter has piqued my interest, despite the fact that I haven’t played the former since its release, since I want to experience Night City for myself.

Before seeing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I was sceptical that 2024 would really need another cyberpunk anime. The combination of genre and medium has occurred so often that it’s difficult to believe any fresh tales are worth telling in this setting. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, however, argue that CDPR’s vision of Night City still has rich veins still to be explored and may even provide a road map for where CDPR should take the series in the future.

Verdict

Instead of replacing Cyberpunk 2077, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners adds to it. However, if you want to experience Night City in its most absurd form, go no farther than Studio Trigger’s take on the classic RPG. This voyage is one for the books, and you won’t regret a single heart-pounding second of it.
