Texas Roadhouse Menu: Texas Roadhouse opened in the Green Tree Mall in Clarksville, Indiana, across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky, on February 17, 1993. Louisville native W. Kent Taylor worked in Colorado nightclubs and restaurants. Taylor went home to Louisville, Kentucky, in 1990. He managed Kentucky Fried Chicken and wanted to start a Colorado-themed restaurant. Former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. gave Taylor $80,000 to pursue his goal. Taylor launched Buckhead Mountain Grill 1991. Taylor was a personal chef. Brown spent additional money and planned to establish a second shop in Clarksville, but partnership issues ended it.

Taylor had to choose between Buckhead or starting a new firm when Brown left to explore another steak idea. He chose the latter but had problems attracting backers to begin the new idea. Investors rejected Taylor. Finally, while managing Buckhead, Taylor met a possible investor. Taylor’s sketched steak restaurant proposal intrigued Dr. John Rhodes. Taylor convinced Dr. Rhodes and two colleagues to commit $100,000 apiece in 1992. In 1993, Clarksville’s first restaurant debuted. Taylor sold Buckhead Mountain Grill in 1994 to concentrate on Texas Roadhouse.

Second Debut of Texas Roadhouse

Gainesville’s second Texas Roadhouse debuted in 1993. Cincinnati, Clearwater, and Sarasota built three more restaurants in 1994. Poor building placements closed these three facilities. Kent Taylor had to determine how to keep the original two restaurants in Clarksville and Gainesville successful while the three new businesses failed. Taylor thought greater in-store training, building designs, and restaurant aesthetics would boost Roadhouse’s development. Taylor employed Jim Broyles, a young Louisville chef. Director of Food and Beverages Broyles changed Roadhouse’s food preparation and service. By 1999, 67 locations were opened as the company grew fast. Roadhouse went public in 2004. The first worldwide restaurant opened in Dubai, UAE, in September 2011.

Taylor, 65, committed himself on March 18, 2021, due to severe tinnitus. Jerry Morgan was named president and CEO.

Taylor released his book, Made From Scratch: The Legendary Success Story of Texas Roadhouse, posthumously.
