History of Craigslist

Craigslist Seattle: Craigslist founder Craig Newmark saw individuals supporting one other on the Internet through the WELL, MindVox, and Usenet and felt alienated as a relative newcomer to San Francisco. In 1995, he started a friends-only email group. Most early posts were by Newmark and were notifications of social gatherings for San Francisco Bay Area software and Internet professionals.

Word-of-mouth boosted subscriptions and posts. Without moderation, Newmark was astonished when individuals sent non-event messages. The list helped people fill technical openings by reaching individuals with the right abilities. This added a jobs category. The category list grew due to user demand. In June 1995, Majordomo was installed and “Craigslist” started functioning. Members demanded a web interface. 1996: Newmark registered “craigslist.org”
