Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Creators Snuck In Haytham Kenway

Haytham Kenway: An assassin in Assassin’s Creed Recently, Valhalla revealed an intriguing connection to some templars from Assassin’s Creed III during an interview with Kotaku.

It wasn’t an accident rather, this similarity serves to demonstrate how Ubisoft developers and authors are working within the franchise to incorporate references and lore into the game without having a comprehensive plan in place. Recently Darby McDevitt, store manager on Valhalla, and additional Ubisoft devs answered my questions regarding Vinland – A region which appears later in Valhalla – and I was thoroughly delighted by their answers. When asked why they included links to other matches throughout our meeting these programmers and authors explained their decision: this allows players to connect across matches without breaking continuity – something I absolutely adore!

Whose Haytham Kenway?

Contrary to popular belief, there is no master narrative bible with all details carefully planned out. McDevitt explained that such references and details come about organically as people interact within a match. According to him, “most of what is created happens organically as we navigate creation,”

“As things come together, we see connections to other matches and we cling on them” So when it came time to name both assassins in Valhalla, McDevitt saw an opportunity: “When it came time to mention both Assassins, I proposed Haytham or Hytham as a nod to Edward naming his son after the Assassin who brought back the Hidden Ones to England.” Something similar also took place with cities at Assassin’s Creed Valhalla haytham kenway

Fans immediately noticed the assassin targets from each city as references to the three goals found in Assassin’s Creed II’s original three cities. McDevitt confirmed this was indeed an identical situation: “When we realized all three towns at Assassin’s Creed Valhalla are assassination-themed, we immediately thought of turning them into a grand homage to our very first cities from Assassin’s Creed.”

What made Haytham Kenway turn into an Templar?

  • Haytham began his training in assassination techniques from Edward as a young child however Edward did not explicitly enrol Haytham in the principles associated with the Assassin Brotherhood or even mentioned his existence.
  • In the end, Edward instilled in him the capability to think for himself and the ability to question the conventional knowledge. So, Edward did not teach his son to be a killer, but a person who was able to be a thinker for themselves.
  • Haytham’s final decision to join the Templars wasn’t necessarily precisely planned out from the start and instead was a result of the process of creation as explained by Ubisoft creators.

Haytham Kenway: A Complex Legacy

  • Edward’s method of his approach to Haytham and promoting independent thought may have played a role in Haytham’s decision to be a part of the Templars.
  • Not educating Haytham to join an Assassin Brotherhood, Edward left Haytham free to choose his beliefs according to his perception about the universe.

Why did Haytham Kenway become a templar?

Haytham received his early training in assassination arts from Edward while still a child, though he never explicitly indoctrinated him with ideas of the brotherhood or even mentioned its existence to him.

Instead, Edward instilled in him the capacity for independent thought and to challenge conventional wisdom. Thus, Edward wasn’t training his child to become an assassin but rather someone he aspired to be.

“Games may tempt fans to research every detail and create grand visions on the web, but chances are you are thinking about such things far more than the people creating the matches do. This was something that evolved through iteration.”
