Nintendo Switch OLED: Everything about the Gaming Console

The Nintendo Switch OLED looks fantastic. Super-slim bezels, excellent blacks, and brilliant colours highlight the new 7-inch display. Soon, you won’t want to use the original Switch’s LCD.

You may be reluctant to buy Nintendo’s next-gen system. Black Friday may be the ideal time to buy a Switch. We’ll keep you informed on the greatest Nintendo Switch OLED Black Friday discounts until November 25.

What’s an OLED Switch model and what does it offer? The console’s concealed speakers are remarkable. The Switch’s ‘click’ has never sounded so sharp and clear, and we didn’t need headphones while playing games.

Nintendo Switch OLED Price

Nintendo’s fourth home console, the Switch OLED, premiered on October 8, 2021. It costs $349.99 / £309.99 / AU$539.95, thus it’s more costly than the original Nintendo Switch ($299.99 / £259.99 / AU$469.95) and the Nintendo Switch Lite ($199.99 / £199.99 / AU$329.95).

The OLED Switch’s increased pricing seems realistic. The redesigned console has a 7-inch OLED display, better speakers, twice the internal storage, and a wider kickstand. The dock has a LAN connector for more reliable online play.

Design of Nintendo Switch OLED

The 7-inch OLED display is the most noticeable design change, despite being just 0.8 inches bigger than the original Switch’s 6.2-inch screen. The Switch OLED is 0.1 inches longer at 9.5 x 0.55 x 4 inches (W x D x H), yet it feels familiar in the hands.

Switch OLED is heavier. The Joy-Con add 22 grammes to the Switch’s weight. The increased weight didn’t create tiredness while playing, but it’s worth noting if you already find the Switch heavy.

Two Joy-Con controllers, two Joy-Con straps, and a Joy-Con Grip are included.

Handheld Mode of Nintendo Switch OLED

Nintendo’s OLED Switch model excels in portable mode. The 7-inch screen makes fast-paced games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate easier to follow, and the high-contrast display enhances Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Metroid Dread’s darkly lit areas and alien-like colour palette highlight the OLED’s contrast ratio.

The old Switch’s LCD screen seems washed out compared to the new one. Everything seems bright and welcoming on the OLED variant, especially blacks, which look subdued and grey on the original.

The Switch OLED’s display is just 720p, yet games and text still appeared clear and readable. We didn’t see motion blur, and the monitor was vivid in daytime.

TV Mode of Nintendo Switch OLED

The Nintendo Switch OLED provides no enhancements in TV mode. Yes, the new dock has a LAN connector for more dependable online gaming than Wi-Fi, but you still get 720p UI and 1080p max output. You may still put a LAN adapter onto your Switch dock.

With 4K TVs increasingly popular, the Switch OLED lacks 4K capability. 2016’s Xbox One S can produce 4K.

Tablet Mode of Nintendo Switch OLED

Nintendo Switch OLED’s tabletop mode is a bonus. It’s much simpler (and safer) to operate the Switch in tabletop mode thanks to its new kickstand. We don’t worry about the new hinge weakening over time and failing to snap into place like the previous one.

As with the original Switch, Joy-Con controllers may be disconnected from the machine, enabling you to play with a friend (or stranger) at any time.

Nintendo Switch OLED Performance

Even though the original Nintendo Switch was nearing its fifth anniversary, this edition delivers no performance bump. The top Switch titles look and play the same with the new console’s Nvidia Custom Tegra X1 CPU and 4GB of RAM.

Those looking for a “Nintendo Switch Pro” will be disappointed. Most Switch games still work, but the console’s technology is ageing. The PS5 and Xbox Series X make this particularly true.

The console’s new high-contrast display will make games seem better, but we wanted more. Expect between 4.5 and 9 hours of battery life, depending on the game.

Purchase it if..

  • You play almost exclusively in handheld and tabletop mode: The Nintendo Switch OLED’s most notable enhancements come in portable or desktop mode, with the stunning OLED screen, bigger kickstand, and better speakers.
  • You’re a first-time Switch buyer: This version of the Nintendo Switch has the finest display, kickstand, and speakers. Even though it’s more expensive, first-time buyers should consider it.

don’t purchase it If…

  • You primarily play Switch games in TV mode: When docked, the Nintendo Switch OLED loses almost all of its new features. The console outputs at 1080p, which looks soft on 4K, and there’s no HDR, VRR, or auto low-latency setting.
  • You want a more powerful Switch: The Switch OLED has the same technological characteristics as the original device, thus playing games won’t enhance resolution or frame rates.
