Jada Pinkett Smith talks about Oscars Slap incident
On Wednesday, Matrix and Girls Trip actress Jada Pinkett Smith, who was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018, opened her special to the cameras to share her stories of hair loss. This cames after thousands of people reached out to her with their stories since the Oscars on March 27, when Smith approached comedian Chris Rock and slapped him on stage after making an unscripted joke about Pinkett Smith’s buzzed style resembling Demi Moore’s from 1997 film G.I. Jane.
My deepest wish for Oscar night is that these two brilliant, talented men take this chance to heal, discuss issues and reconcile, she said. “What’s happening in the world right now requires them both – now more than ever. Until then Will and I will keep doing what we’ve been doing for 28 years learning to navigate life together.
He laters apologized to fellow nominees and showgoers when he won the Best Actor prize for King Richard, though he didn’t mention Rock by name in his statements. On social media, however, he addressed Rock directlys, declaring his actions “out of line” and “wrong,” adding that violence has no place in a society of love and kindness.
Following Smith’s voluntary departure from the Academy, its governing board convened to investigate what had transpired and vote on disciplinary measures, including a 10-year ban from attending Academy-sanctioned events such as the Oscars even if he is nominated for any award during that time period.
Sympathy for the Smith family
Celebrities such as Tiffany Haddish, star of Girls Trip, and Janet Hubert (Smith’s Fresh Prince colleague), have expressed sympathy for the Smith family; on the other hand, Oscars hostesses Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer have spoken out against such displays.
Rock’s mother condemned Smith’s actions, yet the comedian has remained mum about the incident. At an April Netflix Is a Joke event in Los Angeles where an audience member stormed the stage and tackled fellow comedian Dave Chappelle, Rock made light of it by suggesting it could have been Smith.
