Jada Pinkett Smith Finally Addresses Oscars Slap

Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, has publicly addressed the event for the first time in an emotionally intense episode of her Red Table Talk show, two months after the Academy Award–winning actor smacked Chris Rock live on stage at the 2022 Oscars.

On Wednesday, the Matrix and Girls Trip actress, who was diagnosed with alopecia in 2018, opened her alopecia-themed show by speaking directly to the camera. She said the special was inspired by “thousands” of people who’ve reached out to her with their hair loss stories since the Oscars on March 27, when Smith approached Rock and slapped him on stage after the comedian made an unscripted joke about Pinkett Smith’s shaved head resembling Demi Moore’s buzzed style from the 1997 film G.I. Jane.

“My deepest goal for Oscar night is that these two intelligent, talented guys have an opportunity to heal, hash things out, and reconcile,” she said. What is the current situation in the world? We need them both, and we need them now more than ever. Until then, Will and I will keep doing what we’ve been doing for the past 28 years: figuring out this thing called life together. Thank you for taking the time to listen.”

WillSmith Apology

He apologized to his fellow nominees and show spectators when he won the Best Actor prize for King Richard moments after slapping Rock, although he did not mention the comic by name in his statement. In a social media post, he eventually addressed Rock, saying that his actions were “out of line” and “wrong,” and that “violence has no place in a society of love and kindness.”

Following Smith’s voluntary departure from the Academy, the governing board met to investigate the incident and voted on disciplinary actions, including a 10-year ban on Smith attending Academy-sanctioned events, including the Oscars, even if he is nominated for any award during that time period.

Sympathy for the Smith family

Several celebrities, like Pinkett Smith’s Girls Trip costar Tiffany Haddish and Smith’s Fresh Prince colleague Janet Hubert, have shown sympathy for the Smith family, while others, including Oscars hostesses Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer, have slammed the display.

While his mother condemned Smith’s behavior, Rock has been tight-lipped about the incident. In May, when an audience member stormed the stage and tackled fellow comedian Dave Chappelle at the Netflix Is a Joke event in Los Angeles, Rock joked that the assailant was Smith.

Chris Rock Statements

The 57-year-old comedian brought up the slap again during a stand-up show at London’s Royal Albert Hall a few days later.

Rock reportedly told the audience, “I’m okay, if anyone was wondering.” I’ve regained the majority of my hearing. Expect me to avoid talking about the bulls—. I’ll talk about it on Netflix at some point. “
