John Edward Bayless II was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Skip father, John Sr., immediately began calling him Skip; his father had previously called his mother “Skip,” as in “skipper of the ship.” The moniker stuck right away, and Bayless’ parents never called him John, forcing him to legally change his name to Skip.
Bayless parents were the owners and operators of the Hickory House, an Oklahoma City barbecue restaurant. Bayless’ passion for sports dates back to his childhood. He was a basketball and baseball player in the past. In 1971, Bayless served as salutatorian of Northwest Classen’s graduating class.
