C. Avis Robinson was born Avis Edna Collins on July 26, 1953, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Her paternal grandparents’ names are Edward and Annie Collins. She is third in a family of four for her parents. Her ancestry includes black, white, and Nottoway Indian people.
When Robinson was four years old, she moved to Silver Spring, Maryland, with her mother, a cancer researcher, when she was offered a job at the National Institutes of Health. She got her education in Maryland, namely at Colesville Elementary, White Oak Junior High, and the Academy of Holy Cross.
Alvis began his education in economics and urban studies at the University of Maryland back in 1971. She also took classes in dance and painting. After finishing her undergraduate degree in three years, Avis C. Robinson moved to San Francisco and enrolled at Golden Gate University. She attended both Golden Gate University and Harvard to get her Master’s degree in economics and finance.
Career of Avis C. Robinson
Artist and quilter Avis C. Robinson got her start painting while still in high school. However, she did not become a professional artist until the 21st century. After graduating school in the late 1970s, she went to work for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as the deputy director of the Office of Atmospheric Programs.
Robinson spent a considerable amount of time at the EPA before transitioning into the nonprofit sector.

Avis’s career as a professional artist really off when her mixed-media portrait of Abraham Lincoln was selected to be shown in the newly renovated entrance foyer of Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Since then, several of her paintings and fabric pieces have been installed in a variety of venues, such as the foyer of the United States Mission to the United Nations in New York.
